Lighthouse Analogy for Intuition

lighthouse analogy for intuition

I believe that intuition is similar to a lighthouse in many ways. I can use the lighthouse as an analogy to better understand the concept of intuition.  Let me explain:

A lighthouse is a tower or building structure flashing a bright light for the purpose of guiding ships to avoid dangerous areas. The main purpose of a lighthouse is to help a ship to fix its position. It is a navigational aid for sea or inland water ways. Although it was widely used before, the number of lighthouses has declined over time due to  expensive operating costs and use of electronic navigational systems like GPS.

A lighthouse stands tall. It is visible from many miles away not only from ships at sea but also on land during both night and day. In bad weather it is difficult for a ship to have clear bearings of her whereabouts especially when sailing close to shore.   The lighthouse’s flashing light signals the ship as to where the dangerous area is, and the direction in which the ship should sail in order to avoid it.  Simply put, it is a navigator.

The presence of the lighthouse is visible from far due to the strong beacon reaching horizontally to ships at sea.  However, you may find it difficult to notice the presence of the powerful light if you stand right under the tall lighthouse. The powerful beam from the lighthouse is not designed to make it bright below the tower. Japanese proverb once said: “Under the lighthouse it is dark.”

The lighthouse beams, although powerful enough to navigate ships away from the danger zone, are not visible even if you stand next to the source of the light.

This truth about lighthouses, ships and the light beneath the lighthouse applies to humans as well.  You have a powerful light navigator within you from the moment you were born but are unaware of it because as is in the case of standing beneath the lighthouse, you are too close to the source to recognize it.   The difference between you and the lighthouse is that you own this lighthouse. You have the powerful lighthouse within you and you can control your lighthouse. You have been standing under your lighthouse and you have been feeling that you are “in the dark” by not knowing that you are the owner of this lighthouse.

You own your lighthouse. Believe it. The navigation system with fully functional quality to navigate through the dark sea, the unknown future, is yours. Your lighthouse beacon can guide you and people around you if you pay attention to your beacon. Starting today, you need not worry about anything.  That inner beacon of your own lighthouse is your intuition.  Intuition is a powerful life directional guide. In my Book of Intuition I talk about how you can cultivate this power so that it stands you in good stead throughout life.

Let your inner “lighthouse” intuition, be the shining light for your life.
